Earlier today, the Giants reported that kicker Brandon McManus has been released as part of their roster cuts to reach the 75 player limit. Before the official deadline of 4 PM, the team negotiated a trade with the Denver Broncos to send the kicker to the mile high city in exchange for a conditional seventh round draft pick. The Broncos are in need of a kicker for the first month of the season due to the suspension of Matt Prater for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Since receiving a DUI in August 2011, Prater has been in the leagues alcohol program. Details of his latest violation have not been made public.
The combination of Denver’s premiere home kicking conditions and the strong leg McManus demonstrated throughout the summer are a perfect match. McManus kicked a 75 yard field goal in warm ups before Friday’s Jet game and, given the thin air in Denver, kicking for distance there is easier. Prater kicked a National Football League record 64 yard field goal in Denver against the Tennessee Titans on December 8, 2013. Three of the Broncos first four games are at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver.
