The Selection: Draft day is finally here and after waiting what seemed like forever, the Giants made their pick at 9:26 PM, selecting Odell Beckham, Wide Receiver, from LSU. Not a tall receiver at 5’11”, Beckham brings 4.41 speed in the forty yard dash. He runs fluid routes, makes plays, and can also contribute to the team ask a kick returner. He should compete with Rueben Randle for a starting job opposite Victor Cruz or will take snaps in the slot away from 2013 breakout player Jerrel Jernigan.
Who They Passed Up: In selecting Beckham, the Giants passed up on Offensive Tackle/Guard Zack Martin from Notre Dame and Pitt Defensive Tackle Aaron Donald. Donald went to the Rams with the very next pick and Martin went to the rival Cowboys at pick 16. Both players would have filled greater needs on the team than Beckham. The LSU wide receiver was the best player on the Giants draft board, and they took him.
Expert Rankings: Beckham placed 17th on NFL Network’s Mike Mayock’s top 100 players. Gil Brandt, of nfl.com and SiriusXM, ranked him 15th. In both instances, he was the third wide receiver on the list.
Current Giant Most Effected: Randle. He struggled to learn Kevin Gilbride’s offense and had two seasons to pick it up. Now he has to learn an entirely new system. If he can’t, and continues to run wrong routes, he will be passed on the depth chart by Jernigan, Beckham, and perhaps even Mario Manningham.
